Walcot boxer Tommy McDonagh suffered a shock defeat in the south west regional round of the CYPs in Bristol, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
After a ring absence of five months, the England international performed slightly below par during his class A (75kgs) contest with Mateusz Ziolkowski from Heart of Portsmouth ABC.
The 16-year-old made a good start, landing with left jabs and a heavy straight right within the opening minute.
But Ziolkowski was tough, taking the shots well before replying with straight punches of his own.
Throughout the contest the better quality came from the Walcot boxer, but the sheer quantity of Ziolkowski's punches meant he edged ahead by one point going into the last round.
The final two minutes were tough and uncompromising, with both boxers giving their all, but it was Ziolkowski who prevailed 21-18.
Walcot chief coach Harry Scott said: “That's boxing, you can't win all the time.
“Tommy is a two-time national champion but today he was not at his best. Hopefully he will learn from this defeat and come back stronger.”
