Rees handed top gong at Walcot show

LAWRENCE Rees was crowned Best Walcot Boxer after the 14-year-old led a successful evening for local boxers at Walcot’s winter show recently, writes Dave Veysey.

With 11 of the Swindon’s gym’s fighters claiming victories from 16 bouts, there were plenty of outstanding performances from the home boxers in front of a packed house at Supermarine.

Consquently, it was a tough choice for the sponsors to decide who to hand Best Walcot Boxer to, but Michael Quelch of Michael's Tailoring opted to hand the accolade to Rees after his comfortable points victory over Ryan Cozzolino from Barton Hill ABC.

The grandson of chief coach Harry Scott was slick and elusive, landing with fast left jabs and heavy rights.

He is building up an impressive record, having won eight of his nine contests to date.

Another outstanding performance came from Walcot's England schoolboy international Patrick McDonagh, also 14.

He beat Guildford's Danny Wilson by a unanimous points decision.

The talented southpaw was always in command and looks sure to have another successful season.

Patrick's younger brother Johnny got the ball rolling earlier in the evening with a confident debut victory.

The pint-sized 11-year-old easily accounted for Jack Jenkins of Chepstow ABC on points, and looks a real prospect.

Three more Walcot debut victories followed.

Jack Evans looked good in defeating Archie Lowther from Barton Hill ABC while Ross Kennedy, 11, looked equally assured during his victory over Gloucester's Nathan Knight.

Completing the quartet of winning debutants was 12-year-old Hugh Gallagher.

Son of club vice-chairman John, Hugh overcame a slow start to impose his authority over Louis Scimone-Davis and was awarded a majority points verdict.

Another stylish winner for the host club was John Luke Bolton.

The 15-year-old was in top form as he beat opponent Bradley Warwick (Weston-super-Mare) by a unanimous points margin.

Said Eltuyev, 13, comfortably overcame the challenge of Chepstow's Scott Webber while Charlie Hatfield was another Walcot winner.

The 14-year-old won a close tussle with Lee Knight of Gloucester ABC.

There was another winning Charlie as Charlie Trinder boxed well to defeat Chris Diston (Chepstow ABC) by a unanimous points verdict.

Returning after an eight-year break from boxing, Ben Fitch, 23, notched up Walcot's eleventh and final win of the evening.

The middlewight met Carl Maisey from Swindon's Fitzpatrick Gym in a close and thrilling encounter.

In a bout where the result could have gone either way, Fitch was returned a majority points victor.

Several Walcot boxers performed creditably in defeat, notably Kieran O'Donoghue who locked horns with Guildford's Luke Thompson in a battle of area champions.

After three exciting rounds just one point separated these talented 13-year-olds, with the Surrey boxer just getting the nod.

Of the other Walcot combatants, Sarkawt Aziz was unlucky not to have his arm raised after three crowd-pleasing rounds with Ray Burford (Gloucester ABC).

Also slightly unlucky was Luther Ward,15, who lost on points in a good tussle with Sadnan Haeger from Barton Hill ABC.

Michael Connors battled bravely but lost out to the muscular Matt Mudway (Factory ABC) , whilst Jake Griffiths started well but faded against Tom Harris (Weston-super-Mare).
