KELVIN Young’s quest to find an opponent to face him in Chippenham next month has been completed, thanks to the Adver’s web site, writes PETER FOLEY.
His manager Keith Mayo received a call from Sheffield fighter Dean Walker, who had been browsing the internet and picked up the story.
And when his mobile rang it ended almost a month of frustration for the Swindon boxing promoter, who had cast the net wide in search of an opponent for the recently-crowned International Masters Middleweight champion.
Mayo said: “Dean’s timing was just perfect. I had been waiting on a series of calls regarding an Eastern Europe opponent, and all the necessary paperwork was not in place to get that bout on the bill.
“We talked about what weight Dean would scale on the night plus any other existing contractual arrangements, so that all the right boxes were ticked.
“Dean boxed Kelvin before and felt that he had not really done himself justice on that occasion. He asked whether he could request a rematch over a longer schedule (the pair boxed four three-minute rounds previously) and I said I would talk to Kelvin. “He was happy to face Dean again so the pair will now meet over six three-minute rounds in Chippenham.”
Walker, 32, turned professional in 2000 and has had 49 outings since trading in his vest, but his Swindon opponent is swift to point out that what happens on the night is all that matters.
Young said: “It is one man against the other and past performances and statistics do not enter the equation.
“He feels he has something to prove against me, so now he has that chance in the ring, the only place that counts. I will still show him the same level of respect as I did for our first fight in Chippenham earlier this year. It is a sporting contest and we will see the best man win.”
Marvin Mullins, another former Penhill amateur, and new Horseshoe professional Dazza Usher also features on the eight-bout card at the Olympiad.
Tickets for the December 3 event, priced at £35 and £60 (VIP), are available by calling Mayo on 07789 890453, Young on 07949 513960 or Mullins on 07710 304212, or at www.kmpromotions.co.uk.
