Mayo claims Young is on verge of first pro KO

PROMOTER Keith Mayo is adamant Kelvin Young’s first pro knockout is just round the corner ahead of the middleweight’s rematch with Dean Walker tonight.

Young has won nine of his 10 pro fights but all have come by way of points victories, with that one telling punch so far proving elusive.

But Mayo says his Horsehoe Gym man is close to achieving the feat and reckons it will be sooner rather than later.

“It’s something him and his trainer Islan Eltuyev have talked about,” said Mayo.

“I’m convinced that will come because he’s got everything else right - he boxes well, moves well, has a long reach and keeps himself out of trouble.

“It would be nice to have that stoppage or knockout and it will come, I’ve watched him in the gym and he’s getting better and better the whole time.”

Young headlines at the Olympiad in Chippenham this evening as he meets the Sheffield opponent who he defeated back in April.

The International Masters champion will tackle Walker over six three-minute rounds, a longer duration than their last contest.

Swindon-based Young has recovered from a swollen hand which he sustained in sparring around six weeks ago, as he awaits the bout against a man taking up his 50th pro assignment.

Elsewhere, former Penhill amateur Steve Mullins will aim for a second win when he faces Trowbridge debutant Dan Blackwell, the younger brother of English middleweight title holder Nick Blackwell.

Two more Wiltshire fighters feature on the seven-bout card and both are based at the Contender Gym in Trowbridge.

Light-welterweight Dan Carr faces Gloucester’s Danny Carter and middleweight Aaron Fox meets former Bath Rugby Academy player Mike Rose, who makes his debut.

Lydney’s Chris Higgs tackles veteran Jason Nesbitt and Bicester’s Daza Usher faces Birmingham veteran Sid Razak in his first outing in the paid ranks.

The clash between Gloucester’s Mike Biggs and Kristian Laight, from Nuneaton, completes the bill.

Some tickets, priced £35, will be on sale at the venue when the doors open at 6.30pm.
