Unbeaten Jordan set for national final

THE latest junior boxing sensation to come out of Walcot ABC is a 13-year-old Dorcan schoolgirl, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

Western Counties Champion Jordan O'Donoghue is unbeaten in her boxing career to date and competes in the national schoolgirl final in Gorton, Manchester, tomorrow.

In the opposite corner in the class A (42kgs) clash will be Home Counties champion Niamh McGuckin from Berinsfield ABC in Oxfordshire.

Walcot's rising star has won both her contests in stylish fashion, and has been boxing the boys at Walcot in preparation for the final.

She said: “I've been sparring a lot with my twin brother Kieran, who never gives me an easy time, and also John Luke Bolton and Charlie Hatfield.

“This is great for me as they are all more experienced than I am, and they all hit harder than girls too.”

Her coach, Walcot veteran Harry Scott, is no stranger to ladies’ boxing, having previously trained Amy Wharton to reach two senior female national finals.

He said: “Jordan is a very fit and dedicated boxer who has a high level of skill. Provided she holds her nerve on the big day, I am confident that she will do us all proud.”

Jordan's dad Jason has recently qualified as an ABA boxing coach and he helps train his daughter at Walcot.

He added: “Jordan has trained hard for this contest and she is ready to take the title.”

The boxing starts at 12.30pm at the Manchester Boxing Centre of Excellence.
