Walcot Amateur Boxing Club’s Jordan O’Donoghue was unlucky not to come away with the title after narrowly losing on points to Niamh McGukin at the National Schoolgirls Finals in Manchester.
From the first bell of the Class 2 (42kgs) contest, the 13-year-old attacked with left jabs and straight rights, with the more experienced McGukin dancing around the ring but throwing very little in the way of scoring shots.
The Dorcan schoolgirl looked to have had the better of the opening round, so a scoreline of 4-4 baffled the Walcot corner who felt they should have been well ahead.
During the middle session the Oxfordshire teenager came more into the contest, but what looked an even round resulted in McGukin taking a 9-8 lead.
The final round was an all-action affair with both girls giving their all, but the Walcot youngster appeared to have landed the greater volume of punches.
The judges however thought otherwise, and awarded McGukin a 14-12 victory.
Both girls were warmly applauded by the large crowd after a terrific contest.
O’Donoghue’s coach Harry Scott was disappointed with the result, but not with his protege's performance.
He said: “Jordan did her best and gave me 100 per cent effort, but it was not our day.
“I thought she did enough to win, and so did several others who were watching at ringside “But that's boxing, sometimes the results do not go your way.
“Jordan is a disciplined and talented boxer who is a credit to her family and the club, and she will go far in the sport if she keeps at it.”
