Horseshoe Gym set to host first amateur show

HORSESHOE Amateur Boxing Club will stage its first ever tournament at the Next Generation Gym in Larch Close, Kembrey Park on Saturday, February 25.

And it marks a landmark occasion for the club, which was only registered with the Amateur Boxing Association last September.

Chief coach Brian Roberts, who took the helm at their Greenbridge base after previously being involved at both the Penhill and Walcot gyms, said: “To be able to stage a tournament in our inaugural season is a tremendous achievement - many clubs wait a year or two before attempting it.

“It is also important for all the lads who train at the club - they get the chance to box in front of their family and friends close to home.

“Although some of our boxers had previous bouts, the majority had never laced a glove before joining the club.

“But what they may lack in experience is more than matched by their dedication, determination and commitment in the ring.”

Eight Horseshoe boxers will climb through the ropes at the Next Generation gym headed by Ryan Martin.

The 17-year-old welterweight has already captured a Clubs for Young People crown - previously known as the Boys Clubs titles - to become a national champion and went on to box for England.

Now he is looking to make the same impact in the senior ranks.

Light heavyweight Kyle Romaine, 20, previously boxed for Penhill RBL and bids for his third ring success at the Kembrey Park venue.

The same weight division sees Luke Bateman, 18, aim for another win to add to his debut success. The club’s two teenage light middleweight prospects have their first outings in their home town – Bartek Mroszczyk, 15, and Jordan Ryce, 14.

Bantamweight Andrew Reeves, 15, is bidding for a hat-trick after two previous ring successes.

Completing the Horseshoe contingent are two of the club’s growing schoolboy contingent.

Kayden Connolly, 11, is bidding for his first win and Vincenzo Granato, 10, makes his ring debut.

The opening bouts in this year’s senior ABA title trail complete the inaugural Horseshoe card.

The first bell rings at 6.30pm and admission is £10.

Tickets can be obtained in advance by contacting Brian Roberts on 07960 009472.
