Gregory and Williams to meet at Swindon MECA Gregory and Williams to meet at Swindon MECA

THE Ultimate Non-Professional Boxing heavyweight title will be on the line when Dave Gregory and Phil Williams go head-to-head at Swindon MECA tomorrow night.

The pair top the bill of the second Swindon Fightclub event, and will clash to decide who is the town’s leading heavyweight.

Gregory comes from a cage fighting background, but the 37-year-old Honda worker is convinced he can produce in the ring.

“Training is going well, but it is hard to fit in when you are working full time and have kids,” he said.

“I was doing the boxing training to improve myself in the cage, and both styles are hard work in their own way.

“I know Phil is a good fighter who has been through the ABA and had good training, and it really is a case of the brawler against the boxer.

“But that doesn’t matter and I am confident I can win.

“My boxing is getting better and better, and I am confident I have a lot more power than he does which will show in the fight.”

Williams is more than 10 years Gregory’s junior, and is hoping to go professional in the near future.

The former Penhill amateur is convinced he holds the advantage as the pair prepare to clash at the MECA, and is confident his superior boxing experience will see him through.

“I have more boxing experience than him and I am 10 years younger, and at 26 I will have more in the tank and that could be crucial,” he said.

“I have seen him fight three times in boxing, and from what I have seen he has only won once.

“Cage fighting is a different game, and he can’t fight on the floor and he can’t kick in boxing, so I am confident I can beat him in a fist fight because I have a lot more experience.

“I am thinking about going professional in the near future, and taking this fight is a great way to get in shape and to prepare myself for that.”

Tickets for the event, which includes ten whitecollar fights, cost £20 or £40 for VIP, and are available by calling 01793 495527 or on the door.
