McDonagh makes fine start for Walcot
Eleven-year-old Patrick McDonagh made a bright start to his Walcot boxing career with a convincing win over Lee Bullock of Gloucester at the Yate Leisure Centre.
The younger brother of Golden Gloves Champion Tommy, Patrick attacked from the outset, landing with fast left jabs and straight rights to force an early standing count on his opponent.
The second round saw McDonagh continue in the same vein, and after sustained pressure Bullock was retired by his corner.
Coach Harry Scott was delighted and said: "For an 11-year-old to win his first contest in that way was very impressive.
"It's obviously early days but I feel Patrick has a big future in the sport if he keeps training hard."
However, there was disappointment for the Walcot club at Frome in Somerset, where Owen Gallagher lost an entertaining tussle with Craig Ryder from the host club.
Coach Dave Holyday said: "Patrick boxed brilliantly and I was really pleased with him."
Walcot ABC's Joe Buckley and Connor Wells both drew a blank when they represented the Western Counties against the Eastern Counties at the Bristol Sporting Club Dinner event, held at the Marriott Hotel, Bristol.
Fourteen-year-old Buckley lost a close contest to Luke Fowler by a majority points decision.
There was very little between these two determined teenagers throughout the contest.
Fowler shaded the opening round on workrate, but the Walcot boxer redressed the balance in the middle session, landing with several straight rights.
The final round was a close affair with the ringside judges awarding a narrow points victory to the Eastern Counties boxer.
Thirteen-year-old Connor Wells faced England Schoolboy International Jordan Gill.
The Swindonian stuck manfully to his task throughout but was always trailing his slick opponent.
After receiving a standing count in the second round, Wells raised his game in the last to land with fast shots of his own.
But Gill was a deserved unanimous points winner.
Chief coach Scott said: "Both lads did their best against quality opposition.
"It is an honour for two Walcot boxers to represent the Western Counties at this prestigious event."
