Cooney just misses out
PENHILL'S Shaun Cooney was the only Swindon boxer on the card at Leicester's Heart of England Amateur Boxing Club, coming away with a slender defeat on points.
Cooney took on M Stewart in the 49kg division and boxed well and was unlucky not to claim a victory. It was a close contest with both boxers landing some eye-catching punches but the Swindon boxer just ran out of steam in the final round.
Head Coach Steve Cole said: "l was pleased with his performance he just ran out of gas in the last."
Also in action for Penhill last weekend were twins Freddie and Frankie Nicoll who contested a skills bout with no official winner or loser.
Boxing in his first contset was Jordan Gulliver, who took on Adam Howe from Frome in the 57kg division.
In the first round, Gulliver boxed behind a fast jab while Howe threw lots of punches without finding the target.
Gulliver connected with a straight right hand to the jaw early in the round which made Howe's legs dip and forced the referee to give him a mandatory eight count.
In the third, Gulliver finished the job early with a hard straight right hand to win by knockout
Top of the bill was Kelvin Young, who faced Mike Rose from Frome.
In the first round Rose came out trying to pin Young against the ropes but the Penhill boxer was too quick on his feet and hit him with a fast flurry of punches, including a fast long jab.
Rose found it hard to get any where near Young in the second round with the Penhill man landing some nice straight right hands.
Rose upped the tempo in the third round only to be matched by Young who went on to claim the unanimous decision.
Coach Simon Knowles said: "It was another good night for Penhill Boxing Club with Kelvin Young having a good win against a boy that has only been beaten once in the last seven contests.
"Jordan had a great start to his young boxing career and it was good to see twins Frankie and Freddie Nicoll have a skills bout which will help bring these boys on."
