Classy Simon is too good

9:50am Saturday 26th April 2008

SIMON Knowles Jnr put on a superb display to defeat former Western Counties champion Loyd Barwood, of Paignton ABC at Sturminster Newton.

It was a step up in class for the Penhill fighter, but in the first round, Knowles boxed well behind a fast jab and straight right hand.

Knowles landed a super right uppercut on the bell and got the better of the second.

The last round was similarly action-packed, both boxers giving everything they had, but it was Knowles who received the decision.

Luvson D'Costa fought Charlie Parry, from the host club, whose style of coming forward caused the Penill youngster a few problems.

D'Costa handled that well, also landing some good shots of his own, but lost out on a majority decision.

  • Walcot flyweight Mubashar Hussain was beaten 11-3 on points in the quarter-finals of the ABA championships in Sheffield by the favourite for the title, Ashley Sexton of Haringey. Hussain said: "I'm disappointed. I thought I was up and cannot believe it."
