Goddard happy with Western Counties bow

PENHILL'S Adam Goddard represented Western Counties for the first ever time, losing out on points against Eastern Counties.

It was the first time in five years since a Penhill fighter has boxed for the Western Counties, and Goddard took on Govier, from Paignton ABC, who was the taller of the two.

He tried to keep Goddard at bay with his long, left jab and good footwork, and just about edged the first round.

The Penhill man had more success in the second, doing well at close quarters, and got stronger as the bout went into the third round, catching Govier with upper cuts, hooks and good jabs.

The final round saw Govier start well, but Goddard took the contest to him, putting him under pressure with a variety of combinations.

Both boxers put in an impressive performance, with Govier taking the honours on a majority decision which could have gone either way.

Regional coach Kevin Hayes was very pleased with Goddard's first performance for the Western Counties, and Goddard himself said: "I was pleased with the way l boxed against a good opponent. I was also very happy to represent the Western Counties and to get my first vest."
