JAMIE Cox must wait for a shot at the British title after promoter Frank Warren told him any such fight is further down the line.
The 22-year-old is desperate to take on British Welterweight champion Kell Brook - and after Brook pulled out of his scheduled defence against Young Mutley, Cox offered to fill in to show the world he is worthy of a title chance.
Victory against Mutley would have put Cox in the reckoning for a showdown with champion Brook but Warren has refused to sanction the fight, leaving the Swindon boxer to concentrate on his scheduled clash with Mark Lloyd in Wolverhampton on Friday, April 24.
“I’m not massively disappointed because it was just an idea we had,” said Cox, who is sponsored by George White Superbikes.
“I would have loved to have fought Young Mutley and then set up a fight with Kell Brook but Frank Warren didn’t want to go down that route.
“Frank Warren has different plans for me and they don’t want me fighting Young Mutley or Kell Brook right now, they are fights later down the line.
“I know I am good enough and ready to fight either of them but for now all I can do is just keep beating who they put in front of me.”
Cox’s fight with Lloyd is an English title eliminator and, after stopping his last opponent Jason Rushton in the opening round back in February, the Swindon boxer is in confident mood.
He added: “I will now focus on the fight with Mark Lloyd.
“I’ve carried on preparing for the fight with Mark even though there might be the chance to fight Young Mutley so nothing has really changed.
“Training has been going well and my weight is well down already.
“It is an English title eliminator and I’m confident I can beat him.
“Mark is a tough, rough fighter but I know I have the tools to beat him.
“Hopefully people will see a bit more boxing this time but if there is the chance to knock him out early then I’ll obviously go for it.”
While Warren seemingly wants to keep Cox and Brook apart for the time being at least, the Swindon boxer is still hoping it is a fight for the future, adding: “I think Kell Brook will go on to fight for the Commonwealth or European title now, so he is obviously a little way ahead of me right now.
“He turned pro well before me so he is a few steps ahead but I’m sure we’ll meet one day.
“I’m confident I can beat him and I really can’t wait for the fight to be made one day.”
