SWINDON boxing star Jamie Cox will face Hungarian Janos Petrovics when he tops the bill at KM Promotions’ ‘School’s Out’ boxing show on Friday.
Cox will go in search of victory number 12 of his pro career when he takes on the 37-year-old at the Oasis Leisure Centre, as he continues to build his case for a shot at the British welterweight title, currently held by Kell Brook.
“I feel ready to challenge for the title, it all depends whether I can talk Frank (Warren) into letting me have a go,” said Cox.
“I’m close enough now in the rankings to be put in the frame and there’s no other boxer between me and Kell Brook that is undefeated.
“I’m the only one, so let’s get it on.”
The 22-year-old will have to beat at least Petrovics first before any title fight can go ahead, and Swindon promoter Keith Mayo warned: “Petrovics is a warrior, he’s notched up 40 pro fights, travels well and has eight KOs to his credit.”
But he added: “It’s going to be great fight and one that I’m sure Jamie will relish and win.”
Budapest orthodox fighter Petrovics usually boxes at light middleweight and recently took ex-WBC world light middleweight champion Ryan Rhodes to seven rounds, before suffering a TKO.
He also fought against Ireland’s Eamonn Magee two years ago, losing on points at Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny.
The 1992 Olympian has won 16 fights, eight by knockout, since his 1997 pro debut, but has been defeated in 27 bouts.
Middleweight Marlon Reid, super featherweight Jamie Speight and bantamweight Lewis Browning are just some of the names on the card for Friday’s show.
Tickets can be bought by contacting the Oasis Leisure Centre on 01793 445401, or Belinda on 07825 329539.
