LECHLADE are preparing for what the club are branding “the biggest weekend” in their 127-year history as they aim for league and cup success.

On Saturday the Manor Ground outfit take on Potterne in a first versus second, winner-takes-all clash in the WEPL Glos/Wilts Division before travelling to Bedminster 24 hours later to take part in the final of the Gloucestershire County Cup.

For league skipper Paul Godding, whose side require victory over Potterne to claim the Glos/Wilts title in their first season at that level, matchday can’t come soon enough.

“We lost to Potterne in the first game of the season and we have worked hard all season to get ourselves into this position,” he said.

“We’ve lost only two games in the league and it would be nice to finish with a big win and secure promotion.

“Big games like this don’t happen often and we need to make sure we make the most of the opportunity.”

Lechlade are only five points clear of Potterne by virtue of their hosts having played an extra game due to the weather.

As a consequence it will be the winners of the showdown on Saturday that will clinch the title and promotion. Third-placed Biddestone still retain a mathematical chance of winning the league but would need to win on Saturday and the game between the top two be lost to the elements.

Regardless of the result, Lechlade will record their highest ever league finish. Ali Killham comes into their side to replace Freddie Martin.

In the County Cup, Lechlade have already upset one higher-ranked team in Premier One side Downend to reach the final and captain Arran Dickinson hopes his team can see off Bedminster to put the gloss on a magical campaign.

“Hopefully Sunday’s game will be the icing on the cake and that we will be celebrating an unprecedented triple success in the club’s history,” he said. “The club has tremendous off-field management and if we can pull this weekend off then it will be a fitting reward for the committee’s efforts and faith in us as a team.”

The potential triple success Dickinson refers to includes a possible title for the Lechlade second team, who take on Marlborough in another all-or-nothing encounter.

Lechlade require victory over their second-placed guests to ensure they are crowned champions of the WEPL Wiltshire 2nd XI Division.

Skipper Max Dawe said: “It would be something quite special if the club could secure two promotions on the same day.”
