LECHLADE skipper Joe Breet says that his troops will be backing their own firepower once again when they welcome a side to the Manor Ground in the Premier Two for the first time this weekend.

Breet’s side, promoted as Glos/Wilts Division champions last term, got their season off to a fine start with a 39-run victory at Cheltenham last Saturday, with overseas man Bradley Dial starring with a thumping unbeaten knock of 164.

This Saturday, they take on early pace-setters Potterne, who finished just 11 points outside the promotion places last season but Breet reckons that his troops are full of belief that their batting prowess can carry them to victory.

“Potterne are a good side. They won the league that we came up from a few years ago and had a good season last year,” said the Lechlade captain.

“They’ve got good players like Ed Young, Tom Cullen and Neil Clark too. But we think that we’re just as strong ourselves.

“Our batting line-up is our main strength. We had a bit of a wobble last weekend to be honest but when Paul (Godding) came in, he helped us get a defendable score alongside what Bradley did.

“It’s our first game at home and we should have a few people there. We’re looking forward to it.”

Elsewhere, Swindon go looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat at the hands of Rockhampton when they also get to grips with their first home fixture of the new season.

Andrew Staff’s side, who were beaten by four wickets last Saturday, take on newly-promoted Burbage & Easton Royal at the County Ground in the Glos/Wilts Division.

But vice-captain Jon Sore says that his team won’t taking a step into the unknown tomorrow after their experience battling Burbage for the Wiltshire Division title two years ago.

“We had a bad season a few years ago and ended up down in the Wiltshire Division. That season, we were pretty much fighting Burbage for top spot,” said Sore.

“We know a few of their players from then, so we know a little bit of what to expect against them.

“We were disappointed to come out on the wrong end of a close game against Rockhampton but they’re one of the sides we’d consider as challengers for that top spot along with ourselves.

“We spoke about the things we got wrong on training this week bu tlooking at negatives after one game of the season is a bit early.”

Purton got their Wiltshire Division campaign underway with a comfortable 63-run triumph at Great Bedwyn.

This weekend, Aaron Lee’s side host Winsley, who also tasted victory in their opening game, beating Malmesbury by 83 runs.
