LECHLADE captain Joe Breet says last weekend’s win at Thornbury has given him hope of a strong end to the season.

The Manor Road side have endured mixed fortunes in their first season in the second tier of the West of England Premier League following last year’s promotion.

A return of six wins from their 14 fixtures so far sees them sit seventh in the table, although they are only eight points shy of fifth place.

Lechlade could find themselves even higher up the table this weekend as they have another winnable game coming up at home to second-from-bottom Chard.

Although they still have some tough fixtures to come, notably against top-three sides Taunton and Keysham, that has not stopped Breet dreaming of an unbeaten end to the season.

“I’ve said all season that I think a top-four finish would be a really good reflection of the team we have got this season and where we are as a club right now, and that is still our aim,” said Breet, who skippered the side to the Glos/Wilts Division title last term “We have got four games left, two of which are against two of the sides at the top in Taunton and Keynsham but there is no reason why we cannot beat them.

“We are looking at the rest of the season trying to win four games, not just one or two.”

Lechlade were caught out when they travelled to Chard in the reverse fixture back in early June, as Breet’s men were beaten by three wickets in South Somerset.

They were made to pay for a bad batting display that day as the skipper and overseas player Brad Dial were the only players to score more than 20.

That defeat came in the midst of four-match losing streak for Lechlade and Breet says they know what they need to do to set the record straight this weekend.

“We made one or two mistakes against them earlier in the season and that is what cost us the game,” said Breet.

“We are a better team now than what we were back then and we have learned from that result and hopefully we won’t make the same mistakes this time around.”
