CAPTAIN Aaron Lee would love to see his Purton team safeguard their future in the Wiltshire Division by their own volition with victory over Calne this weekend.

With three games of the season to go, sixth-placed Purton are 33 points ahead of the drop zone and Lee is certain that his team are in a five-team ‘dogfight’ to remain in the West of England Premier League.

A win at second-from-bottom Calne could just be enough to alleviate any lingering relegation fears and additionally, whilst other results could stack up in Purton’s favour, skipper Lee is keen for his side to get the job done themselves.

“It’s a bit of a dogfight at the bottom of the league right now but, if we can beat Calne this weekend that should be us safe – that’s the way that we’re looking at it,” said the Purton captain, whose team lost by four wickets to Malmesbury last weekend.

“The worst-case scenario is that we lose to Calne but then we’d still have two games left to rectify it.

“Other results could go our way but we want to take it out of other peoples’ hands and get the job done ourselves.

“Losing to Malmesbury last weekend was pretty disappointing but we bowled and fielded terribly and 250 wasn’t a good enough score on that track.

“Like the game against Calne, it was one of the games that we targeted to try and get a win but I’m sure that Malmesbury were thinking the same.

“If you lose a game, then you can lose well by getting as many bonus points as you can and that’s something that we’ve managed to do a lot this season.

“We definitely want to win at Calne but we beat them at our place earlier in the season and I’m sure that they’ll be looking to try and make up for that.”

Purton are set to be boosted by a number of returning faces ahead of their trip to Calne tomorrow.

Lee said: “Sam Shelford is back to open the batting, after missing the last two weeks through work commitments, and we’ve also got our wicketkeeper, Sam Pinchin, back.

“We’ll also have Adam Woolford back in the team and we’re hoping that he can help improve our bowling because it wasn’t great against Malmesbury.”
