SWINDON cricketers will get their chance to pit themselves against several international players tomorrow afternoon.

Hamish Marshall’s Big Bash T20 match, which is being held at Swindon’s County Ground, is in aid of the End Polio Now charity.

Former New Zealand star Marshall has drafted in Swindon’s ex-England bowler Jon Lewis, while 2005 Ashes winning wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, who is now a teammate of Marshall at Gloucestershire, will also feature.

And the Kiwi is looking forward to returning to Wiltshire after featuring in the same event last summer.

“It’s always good to go out and around the surrounding counties to see the local clubs and play a game against them,” Marshall told the Advertiser.

“The team enjoy it and so do the teams like Swindon who get to see us on their own ground.

“It’s definitely nice to give something back. I think I can speak for all the players in the squad, we were all young once and enjoyed going to these types of games and watching the guys at that stage who played at the top level.”

Marshall, who has played 13 Tests and 66 one-day internationals for the Black Caps, is hoping that his side will be able to put on a show for the spectators.

“It’s a strong side with Jon, Geraint and myself,” the 36-year-old said. “I guess the idea is for us to come along and put on a bit of a spectacle.

“Also we want to give the local players a chance to play against some of the county bowlers and bowl against some of the county batters.

“So we’re bringing Lewy along, who is obviously an ex-England player, and Geraint, a former Ashes winner, you’ve got a couple of pretty special players.

“T20 is a format we enjoy and it excites the crowd. You try and hit as many runs as you can, which is something we’ve done well this season.

“These games give the opposition a chance to bowl and for batsmen to play their shots, we’re looking forward to it.

“You never know, you might come across some young cricketer who does pretty well and word gets around.

"When you’re a young cricketer who plays well in front of the county players you never know where that might lead.”

Tickets for the game cost £5 adults or £3 concessions and are available on the gate, which open at 12pm with the match starting at 2.30pm.
