SWINDON Steamers have been crowned Wiltshire’s NatWest ECB Under 19 T20 champions.

Throughout the season, eight teams have been competing in two groups across Wiltshire.

The conclusion of these two groups saw four teams qualify for finals day which was played at Biddestone after the initial finals day in August was cancelled due to rain.

Thankfully, the second attempt saw the rain stay away and so play began in the morning with the first semi-final between Biddestone and Swindon.

After losing the toss, Swindon began their innings and managed to post a very competitive 153-7 from their 20 overs, with Harry Chevis reaching 50 retired, well supported by Christy Millar, who scored 29. Kieran Gash was the pick of the Biddestone attack with 2-25.

Biddestone’s reply never got going as they lost regular wickets and ended up being bowled out with an over to spare for just 106.

Rob Horn (30) top-scored, while Connor Cleary (4-14) and Harry Chevis (3-2) were the pick of the bowlers.

In the second semi-final, Hampset struggled to 97-6 from their 20 overs and Potterne cruised home in 16 overs with seven wickets in hand, with Stan Alsop hitting an unbeaten 32-ball 46.

In the final, Swindon restricted Potterne to 85-6 thanks to an excellent opening spell from Connor Cleary and Tom Codling.

Leading the way for Potterne was Josh Hodder with 50 retired, while Swindon’s Josh Weaver and Jack Harris picked up two wickets apiece.

Swindon reached their target with eight wickets in hand thanks to a third-wicket partnership between Harry Chevis (46 not out) and Josh Weaver (26 not out).

Swindon will now go on to represent Wiltshire in a regional finals day involving the Gloucestershire, Somerset and Worcestershire winners on Saturday, September 26 at Thornbury CC.
