PURTON captain Aaron Lee had no complaints after his clinical side put Westbury to the sword to set the early pace in the WEPL Wiltshire division.

Having restricted the visitors to 160 in their innings, Purton were able to chase down their target in little over 30 overs with seven wickets in hand to make it two wins from their opening two matches.

Lee was the pick of the bowlers as he finished on figures of 4-22 from his nine overs and said he could not find many faults in his side’s performance.

“It’s a fantastic result for the club,” he said.

“In the first half, we bowled a lot better up front and then the spinners came on and bowled really well again.

“They got a bit of a partnership going and we were able to break that.

“It was a bit like last week, Swindon got a partnership going and the lads didn’t panic and stayed patient.

“Once the partnership was broken, I think they were about 44-7 to finish the game and it was a clinical performance.

“It’s always difficult to know what a good score is until you have both had a go on the wicket but, if someone had offered 160 to chase at the start of the day I would have snapped their hands off.”

Chasing 160, Xander Pitchers and Adam Woolford opened the batting and were able to post 138 before the fall of the latter.

Pitchers went on to make 93 as he was trapped lbw just shy of his century and despite the loss of Tom Whittaker for just nine runs, Purton were over the line two balls into the 31st over to secure the seven-wicket victory.

“They were exactly what we thought and had a great seam attack up front,” added Lee.

“The first 10 or 15 overs were key to the rest of the innings for us and how successful our run chase was going to be.

“To get through that without losing a wicket was fantastic.

“We sent in Adam Woolford, who is usually a late order batsman, to go out there and stick it out as long as he could but he ended up seeing out the 10 overs and then some.

“I think he ended up on 43 in the end and did really well.

“We weren’t far off winning by 10 wickets. Xander and Adam batted fantastically well and I think that maybe we lost a bit of concentration because the game was nearly over and we gave a few wickets away at the end.

“Still, beating Westbury by seven wickets is a fantastic achievement and the second team are two from two as well, so the club is doing really well this season.”

Meanwhile, Swindon brushed themselves down after their opening day defeat to Purton to record a 135-run win over Devizes.

Having been put in to bat, Marc Williamson set the tone for the visitors with 57 off 76 balls as Swindon set Devizes a target of 187 for the loss of seven wickets.

However, it was Swindon’s bowling attack that finally got the job done as the hosts were skittled out for just 51 runs, with Cameron Baden the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5-16.
