JAMES Vince’s first foray into the world of Test cricket lasted a little more than half an hour today.

The former Wiltshire batsman was handed his England debut in the five-day format in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

The 25-year-old, from Steeple Ashton, came to the crease before lunch in Leeds with England reeling from a devastating spell from Dasun Shanaka that saw them fall from 49-0 to 51-3.

Ex-Chippenham and Warminster player Vince and Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales saw England through to lunch without any further loss.

However, the Hampshire skipper was caught at second slip by Kusal Mendis for nine off 27 balls.

Hales and Jonny Bairstow each went on to make a half-century as England reached 171-5 before rain brought a premature close.
