SKIPPER Andrew Staff has called for Swindon’s batsmen to find their groove as soon as possible as they look to kick-start their season.

A string of players got themselves in but failed to convert during last weekend’s defeat at Trowbridge, while opener Marc Williamson is the only Swindon man to reach a half-century so far this summer, doing so in the win at Devizes three weeks ago.

That is currently the sole success for Swindon during the 2016 WEPL campaign and captain Staff knows his top order must click into gear if they are to improve that record during the visit of Westbury & District to the County Ground on Saturday.

“For us, it’s about the batting,” said wicketkeeper Staff.

“It’s been a bit wet and we didn’t have much of a pre-season so we have struggled to get people time in the middle. We are training and playing midweek league matches, so we are doing everything we can to get ourselves going.

“Guys are getting 20s and 30s but we just need people to kick on now and if they can, hopefully that will make the difference for us.

“It will be nice to play at home, we certainly know the conditions a lot better there than when we are away, so we have to try to get a positive result.”

Westbury finished as runners-up in the Wiltshire Division last term and have two wins from their three completed matches so far this summer.

Swindon’s Staff therefore knows his side will be pushed to their limits on Saturday as they bid to start pulling themselves towards the right end of the table.

“Westbury are a decent side and at the start of the season they would have been one of a couple of teams who we’d expect to make a real challenge for promotion,” added Staff.

“But we know that on our day, we can be as good as anyone. We look forward to playing them, it should be a good match and hopefully we can get a win that can get our season back going again.”
