PURTON’S progress may be seemingly ahead of schedule this season but the villagers aren’t getting ahead of themselves, according to vice-captain Tom Bowler.

With regular skipper Aaron Lee unavailable last weekend, Bowler stepped in to lead Purton on the road at Great Bedwyn and, a week after falling to a 71-run loss away to Marlborough, they bounced back to winning ways with a comfortable 88-run victory.

That win left Purton third in the WEPL Wiltshire table, just two points behind second-placed Marshfield and 11 adrift of early pace-setters Trowbridge – they also have a 17-point cushion between themselves and Marlborough, who are fourth.

Last term, Purton only survived in the then-Wiltshire Division by eight points and Bowler says that his team are suitably keeping their feet on the ground.

“Some people say that you should never really look at the league table. We do but we’re not getting carried away right now,” said Bowler.

“At the moment, we’re enjoying winning games of cricket and we’re trying to keep doing that.

“If we keep enjoying ourselves and keep playing the way that we’re playing, then we’ll see where that takes us and see where we are with three or four weeks to go.

“Our aim at the start of the season was just to try and stay in this division and that’s not changed.”

Tomorrow, with captain Lee back in action, Purton host third-from-bottom Devizes.
