PATIENCE is the key for Swindon batsman Jon Sore as he bids to make the most of his debut season as a county cricketer.

The Swindon vice-captain has been included in the Wiltshire squad for the first time this summer after several strong seasons at club level.

Sore made his third appearance for the county side last weekend, although he was unable to help them secure a place in the last four of the Unicorns Knockout Trophy as they were beaten away at Dorset in the quarter-finals.

He did not get the chance to bat in that match and Sore has so far scored just 18 runs in the two knocks he has played for Wiltshire.

Sore traditionally opens the innings for his club but has had to settle for a spot in the lower middle order so far while on county duty, restricting his opportunities to impress.

However, the Swindon star is happy to bide is time and is determined to make the most of it should a chance make a name for himself out in the middle come along.

“I have been playing academy cricket with them (Wiltshire) and this year I have been able to force my way into the first-team set-up and it’s been a really good experience,” said Sore, who averages 54.67 at club level in 2016 and made a career high score of 139 last weekend for Swindon.

“I haven’t had too many chances with the bat at the moment with where I have been in the order but if I do get one, then I want to try to make the most of it.

“I think I have done as much as I can for Swindon to try to be involved again with Wiltshire and get another chance but there are a lot of good players in the squad and we will just have to wait and see what happens.”

Sore will be hoping to make his Unicorns Championship debut for Wiltshire this weekend when they play their second match of that competition at home to Cornwall, starting on Sunday at Corsham’s Station Road ground.

Wiltshire head into the match looking for a response to back-to-back defeats as they were beaten at Cheshire in their three-day opener prior to the loss at Dorset in the Trophy.

“Last weekend at Dorset was disappointing because I think we were beaten by the weather. As a team, I think we played the better cricket but unfortunately that’s the way this sport goes sometimes,” added Sore.

“There were a lot of good things for us to build on and although one-day cricket is very different to three-day cricket, we always try to play a positive brand of cricket so hopefully that can help us get a good result in the next game.”
