CAPTAIN Freddie Martin admits uncertainty lays ahead for his Lechlade side as they prepare for the visit of Chippenham this weekend.

Lechlade proved a class above the same opposition when they previously met in the second game of the season, plundering a mammoth total of 335-3 before cutting the Chippenham reply short at 154.

Liam Smith accounted for numbers two to six in the Chippenham batting order, all for single figure scores on his way to a five-wicket haul.

Chippenham have been able to turn their form around since then and sit fourth in the table, two places behind Lechlade, and Martin says battle will resume at the Manor Ground with a degree of trepidation.

“We know Chippenham are a good side. We beat them earlier in the season but I think they are better than that result,” said Martin.

“They always turn out with a strong team and we are expecting a tough game.

“Liam bowled really well against them, he took five wickets and got all of their order out early.

“Although that was great for us that day, we didn’t really get to see what they are like so we don’t know too much about them but we can see from the results they’ve had since we played them that they are very dangerous.”

Brad Dial scored a century that day at Hardenhuish Park and also reached three figures for Lechlade last weekend in their home win over Rockhampton, a result that moved them to within three points of table toppers Cheltenham.

That ton has taken Dial’s total WEPL runs to 500 for the summer but Martin says the performances of someone like Smith against Chippenham previously proves they are more than just a one-man team.

“It’s great to have Brad in our side and it’s even better to have him when he is scoring runs. I think he is the top run scorer in the league now, so we know how important he is,” said Martin.

“He has been brilliant for us for the last few years but it’s not just down to him, we know we have got a few match-winners in our side and that’s what’s allowed us to get into the position we are in in the table.

“Hopefully someone can score a century or produce a bit of magic with the ball this weekend and that will make the difference for us.

“Hopefully we can keep winning and keep moving forward. We are having a really good season so far and we just want to keep that going for as long as we can and see where we end up.”
