PURTON skipper Aaron Lee could not hide his delight at completing the double over local rivals Swindon at the weekend.

After bagging a 29-run success at the County Ground in May, Lee’s men followed up with a win on home soil as they triumphed by six wickets.

“We are really happy. We certainly would have taken that at the start of the season. It’s great for the club and it just shows how far we have come,” said Lee.

Purton looked like would have to chase a much higher target than they actually did, with Swindon dismissed for 227 despite being 170-4 at one stage.

Visiting skipper Andy Staff lamented the fact that Jon Sore, Sean Parker, Marc Williamson and Liam Tucker all got themselves in but none were able to post a match-winning innings, all falling short of half-centuries.

Staff said: “I think we were about 30 or 40 runs short of where we should have been. Four of the top five got 40-odd and if that happens, you think one of them has got to go on and make a decent score.

“Every time we got into a good position or wanted to accelerate, we lost a wicket. We were 150-4 off 30 overs, so from there we are looking to get towards 250 or 260.”

Lee added: “We got off to bit of a poor start. We didn’t bowl in the right areas – we bowled too many four balls.

“The lads came back in the middle overs and the spin really worked for us, as it’s done in a lot of our games this season.

“It was a flat track and although we felt 227 wasn’t a par score, it is not a walk in the park to chase that but we managed to do it pretty well.”

Purton had to negotiate a lightning spell from Doug Baartman (0-31) as they began their reply but once the Swindon seamer finished wicketless from his 10 overs, Elijah Samuel (65), Tom Bowler (58) and Tom Whittaker (45 not out) led what turned out to be a relatively comfortable run chase.

“Doug bowled exceptionally well,” said Purton’s Lee. “They bowled him 10 overs straight and I guess they had to as if you can take a couple of early wickets against any team in this league, you really are right in amongst them.

“We did well to hang in there and not lose a wicket and after that, we were able to push on.”

Staff added: “Doug was too good for them. I think five of his six balls each time must have only just missed the bat, he was so good that they couldn’t get an edge on him.

“Unfortunately, he didn’t take a wicket and I think they were quite happy to see the back of him.

“We also dropped Elijah on 10, so if we’d got rid of him and Doug had got a couple of wickets, then it’s a different game.”
