SWINDON captain Andy Staff hailed his side’s nigh-on-perfect performance as they dispatched Devizes to claim a 199-run victory.

Jonathan Sore (32) and Sean Parker (67), who was playing in the seconds just three weeks ago, got the hosts off to an ideal start at the County Ground with a first-wicket stand of 71.

That allowed the incoming batsmen to play with added freedom and they grabbed their chance with both hands as Marc Williamson hit 108 and Alex Kill scored 85 as Swindon scored 347-6 off their 50 overs.

In reply, Devizes were always struggling and once Joseph Ford (43) and Tom Grant (34) were dismissed, it was only a matter of time for Staff’s side and they completed the job in the 35th over, with their visitors only managing 148.

“It was a really good day at the office,” said Staff.

“We got off to a good start. Sean Parker, who has been doing well for the twos, batted well and that gave us a decent platform to build from.

“All those things we have spoken about in the last few weeks about people getting in and not going on, it all seemed to click this week and four blokes got decent scores.

“We had a decent platform, which allowed the middle order to go on and Marc Williamson got a really good 100 batting at four, supported by Alex Kill who got 80-odd, and it was a pretty perfect innings.

“Devizes bowled well and we got off to a steady start, which allows people to have that little bit of freedom to play their shots.

“Bowling wise, with that sort of target, it was just about being patient and setting the right fields and just waiting for them to make mistakes, which happened.

“The wickets were spread about but everyone got the chance to bowl and they all bowled pretty well.

“It makes my role as skipper pretty easy when we have a day like that because I don’t have to do much.”

Staff, who has a young side at the County Ground, knew a performance like this was in the offing and now hopes it gives them the belief to climb up the table in the remainder of the season.

“It is what we have talked about and what we having been looking to do all year – set a decent platform and go on,” he added.

“It has happened a couple of times and it is good for it to happen again.

“We are a young side and some weeks it is going to happen and other weeks it isn’t.

“We have shown our potential, we have got some really good players and this can only boost their confidence as we look at the run-in for the season.”
