SWINDON were unable to prevent defeat in the first round of the ECB Indoor National Club Championship as they lost to Sarisbury.

The County Ground side, who won the toss and elected to bowl, made a slow start as the visitor’s Ricky Rawlins and Sam Floyd opened proceedings with 25 runs.

The pace of the game was picked up by skipper Matt Journeau and Pete Hammond and the tail of Josh Stewart and Shayne Freemantle kept the pressure on.

Rawlins then returned to the crease to finish with 36 not out, while the Wiltshire champions' best bowling came from Alex Kill who picked up two for 24 as the visitors finished with 132-4.

The hosts’ response with the bat was a good one, skipper Liam Tucker and Paul Paginton were working well until Sam Floyd brought that partnership to an end with a superb diving catch.

Kill and Dan Harris were both run out in the fifth over and things were starting to look tough for the home team, Tucker had retired on 25 by this stage.

In order to try to stay with the required run rate, James Parkinson tried one shot too many as he was bowled out by Pete Hammond This meant it was left to the skipper and Tom Codling to try to bring the team home from the eighth over.

Codling batted and ran well in support of Tucker, but when he was run out in the tenth over it was left to the captain to try to get the victory.

Despite a very brave attempt he was unable to do so after he was ran out with 59, 35 short of the target set by the Hampshire side.
