ROYAL Wootton Bassett skipper Darren Beasant says his side won’t be resting on their laurels when they host Calne at the weekend.

Fresh from a fantastic and convincing win over near neighbours Swindon last weekend, the Bassett captain concedes there isn’t much time to linger on their victory and highlighted the need for another positive result.

While Beasant would like to bask in the glory of their first derby win since 1999, he concedes it is back to business this weekend.

“It means a lot to this club to be competing at this level again. We’ve beaten Warminster, Marlborough and now Swindon, we are competitive at this level,” said Beasant.

“You have to back it up. I think that has been our frustration a little bit this year, we have played good cricket against the top three but then had some games where we didn’t do ourselves justice.

“Calne are in this league for a reason and have been here for 10 years. Going to Swindon and annihilating Swindon is no use if you’re not going to show up the next week.”

Following their return to WEPL Wiltshire this season, Beasant stated the club’s intentions for the season ahead were to stay in the league.

But with three wins already under their belt, the Bassett man thinks his side could start to look up the table instead of over their shoulders.

“We came into the league with the sole ambition of to win enough games so that we stay up and we think five or six will do that,” he added.

“If I am honest, we were awful against Great Bedwyn. We thought we just had to be present to win and we deserved to lose.

“That is an example of what happens when we don’t show up. But after Saturday, I think if we worry about ourselves and prepare properly, we won’t be looking over our shoulder anymore.

“We can compete and our aim for the season is still to stay in this league, but six weeks in, we have three wins against three decent sides.

“I think we are now confident that provided that we prepare properly, we won’t have to worry about looking over our shoulders.”

Elsewhere, Swindon will look for a return to form as they travel to leaders Trowbridge, while Purton head over to Warminster this weekend.
