AVEBURY got their Wiltshire League Division One campaign to a winning start as they defeated Great Bedwyn by three wickets.

Opener Nick Davies (39) was the mainstay of the Bedwyn innings, which was ended at 111 in the 41st over.

Rob Gater (3-27) and Jeremy Richards (3-25) did the bulk of the damage, with only three other Bedwyn batsmen able to reach double figures.

The bowling of Sam Tuttle (4-20) kept Bedwyn in with a shout, but after Gater had scored 32, John Rheinberg (13 not out) and Joseph Clare (nine not out) guided Avebury home.

Avebury's second strong also made a winning start with a five-wicket win over Swindon B.

Ashley Baden's 50 and 33 from Hardeep Jagdey helped Swindon reach 150-8 in their 50 overs, with two wickets each for Glen Robinson, Harry Harrison and Pete Force-Jones.

An unbeaten 84 from Ross Haines paved the way for a successful Avebury run chase, which concluded inside 38 overs.

Top-flight matches between Box and reigning champions Bear Flat and Hinton Charterhouse and Nationwide House were cancelled, as were Swindon United Churches two scheduled weekend appointments, at Beehive Southwick on Saturday and at home to Swindon Nalgo on Sunday.

Potterne 3rd's home meeting with White Horse in Division Three also fell by the wayside as did Corsham 3rd against Marshfield 2nd in Division Four and Erlestoke against Royal Wootton Bassett 3rd in Division Five.

There was no play in Division Six between Sherston Magna and Bradford on Avon 2nd.

The bulk of the Wiltshire League gets under way on Saturday.
