Below-par Goatacre still too strong for Winsley

VICTORY tastes all the sweeter when you don’t play well, according to Goatacre club captain Sam Parish.

Parish’s men triumphed on home turf against fellow high flyers Winsley despite the club skipper claiming his team had not performed to their potential.

“We didn’t actually play particularly well but we did what we needed to do,” he said.

“It’s almost nicer not be on top of your game and beat a good side.

“When you scrap hard and win it almost feels better.”

Winsley were bowled out for 148 with Terry Duffin’s 60 saving the visitors from embarrassment. For the hosts Craig Gibbens took 4-43, Jif Wilkins 3-43 and Kevin Iles 2-9.

Goatacre kept up with the required run rate throughout and eventually sealed victory at the end of the 45th over. Match day skipper Steve Lines top-scored with 32.

“We had a hell of a lot of rain on Friday and the wicket was a bit damp, so it was difficult to score quickly on it unless people bowled badly,” added Parish.

“They bowled very consistently and having had some of the problems we’ve had batting this year, we thought we had to bat our overs to win the game.”

Elsewhere in the Wiltshire Division, Purton slipped to a 32-run loss at Calne, Malmesbury were crushed by 124 runs at home to Potterne and Nationwide House lost by six wickets at Marlborough.
