CRICKET: Batchelor's boys on the High road to a third successive promotion?
HIGHWORTH are gunning for a hat-trick of promotions in the Wiltshire County Cricket League as they prepare for life in the dizzy heights of Division Two.
Having gone unbeaten throughout the whole of 2006 and 2007, Highworth head into Saturday's opener against Wroughton Wranglers as one of the favourites for the Division Two crown.
Two years ago Highworth won the Division Five title at a canter, winning 15 out of 18 matches with just three cancellations.
They were promoted two divisions in a bid to increase the competition, but 12 months later Highworth were celebrating again after bringing the Division Three title back to the Elms.
With just two days to go until the start of the season, new captain Danny Batchelor insists Highworth can now make it three in a row.
He said: "We have to believe we are going to have another good season, and everyone is looking forward to it.
"I think the key to our success has been our consistency in team selection. The matches have got progressively harder over the last couple of years though.
"Last season there were one or two that could have gone either way, but we managed to pull it off.
"I think that was down to the experience we had drawn from winning so many matches."
Batchelor has identified last year's captain Mark Thatcher as a key player for his side, while Lee Beaver will again be expected to provide some fireworks with bat and ball.
All-rounder Tony Summers will be missed however. A hip operation will rule him out until late summer.
Joining Highworth in Division Two will be Corsham 3rd and Swindon 3rd, who finished second and third in a rain-affected Division Three last season.
KC Club (formerly Swindon Litten Tree) will be hoping to establish themselves in Division One after their promotion last time out.
Blunsdon will be looking to bounce back to Division Three at the first time of asking following a disastrous 2007 campaign, in which they won just one match.
Corsham 4th and Wootton Bassett 3rd will be battling for honours again following their promotion from Division Six, with Potterne 2nd joining their first team in the West of England Premier Division.
Two matches have already been completed in the WCCL, played last weekend.
In Division Three, Lambourn beat Swindon United Churches by 30 runs, while in Division Six, Bathford were 80-run winners over Beanacre 2nd.
