CRICKET: Trophy gloom as Wiltshire crash
WILTSHIRE face an uphill task to qualify for the quarter finals of the MCCA Trophy following a heavy seven-wicket defeat at Devon on Sunday.
Put in to bat on bowler friendly pitch, Wiltshire had no answer to the Devon seam quartet of Ian Bishop (2-18), Neil Hancock (1-25), S. Barlow (3-22) and Trevor Anning (4-17) as they were bowled out for just 91 in 33.5 overs.
Only Damian Shirazi, with a determined and patient 47, applied himself in the difficult conditions.
Devon in reply were soon in trouble at 22-3, with Alex Senneck taking (2-31) and skipper Richard Bedbrook (1-17) doing the early damage.
But then Hancock and David Court mixed watchful defence with controlled aggression to produce the only partnership of the day, putting on 70 for the 4th wicket to see Devon home in only 23.1 overs.
Wiltshire's next match in the competition is on Sunday, May 18 against Berkshire at Trowbridge (11am start), with it looking as if they will have to win both this and the final match against Herefordshire to qualify for the last eight.
