SWINDON-based Sir Mark Todd says that everyone has to step up to catch Michael Jung after the German completed the Rolex Grand Slam at Badminton Horse Trials.

Having won at Burghley and Kentucky last weekend, Yung completed the third in the Rolex Series as he went clear in the show jumping stage to finish on his dressage score.

New Zealand rider Todd, whose yard is at Badgerstown on the edge of Wanborough, finished in fourth spot as he also went clear on the final day.

“He is phenomenal,” Todd said about Jung.

“We have got to try and do better to try and best him but he is a beautiful rider and is solid in all three phases.

“I still think he is beatable but we have got to be as good as him or better.”

Todd finished on a score of 44.8 from his dressage stage having also gone clear and within the time in the cross country stage.

“I don’t think he (Leonidas II) put a toe on any fence,” he added.

“He felt amazing today and came through cross country in amazing order and I don’t think he has had a fence down in a three day yet so that gives you a bit confidence going in there.

“It wasn’t the most difficult track. It wasn’t big and it wasn’t the most technical but the nerves were still there and you can’t afford to make a mistake and thankfully he didn’t.

“I was disappointed after the dressage. He is a horse that is well capable of being near the lead in the dressage so I was a bit disappointed.

“You have got to put that behind you and the horse hasn’t put a foot wrong since.

“He was brilliant yesterday and he jumped brilliantly today. He feels fantastic and has come through the competition well so I have got to be happy.”

Meanwhile, Marlborough-based Paget finished in fifth place after having one fence down in the show jumping and described his weekend as bitter-sweet.

“I was happy with my show jumping round,” he said.

“If I could ride it again I think maybe I would have jumped in a bit stronger over the oxer before.

“I had to push a little bit to the vertical and I was able to wait a little bit when I got there but I got enough squeeze in just to get up high enough.

“If I could do it again I would probably have a better shot at it but you only get one shot at it.

“Overall the weekend was a little bit up and down.”

Despite having a fence down, Marlborough-based Jonelle Price climbed one place to 10th, while Dauntsey’s Beanie Sturgis was a place behind in 11th after her clear round lifted her up eight places.

Highworth-based Paul Tapner, who went in the morning session, climbed up to 18th place with just one fence down.

Laura Collett, who is based in Lambourn, went clear on Grand Manoeuvre to claim 22nd spot, while Marlborough-based Jesse Campbell brought down four fences on Kaapachino to drop to 33rd.
