SUPERMARINE might not have been at their best on Saturday, but yet again Division One South & West’s form side took another victory and jumped up to third in the table as a result.

The Webb’s Wood side secured a 3-1 win over visitors Mangotsfield which included two late strikes, and that takes the South Marston side to eight league wins on the spin.

On-fire strikers Josh Parsons and Ash Edenborough were both on the scoresheet and an effort from Chris Taylor came in between, with Ben Hunt’s equaliser ultimately rendered meaningless.

With 20 minutes gone, centre-back Craig Curtis put sent a pass through for Parsons to chase, and he turned the centre-half inside out before slotting past Kev Sawyer and into the corner.

Midway through the second half Hunt profited when full-back Kyle Lapham was caught out of position, the striker lobbing stopper Kent Kauppinen to make it 1-1.

However, with 10 minutes left, wide man Jamie Prictor - on for Sam Morris who had taken a whack on the knee - played a one-two with Taylor and then pulled back from the by-line to allow the central midfielder to send home the second.

Moments later the game was wrapped up when Edenborough got a toe to Danny Hilder’s cross from the right and the ball rolled across the line.

Marine boss Dave Webb said: “We’re on a great run, but to be honest I didn’t think we were completely at it, a couple of weeks off affected us.

“We started pretty slowly and they were probably better than us for 20 minutes and got in a couple of times, but last-ditch heroics kept it at 0-0. It was a great boost for us to go in front when they were on top.

“It was a bit scrappy after that and never really got going, it was a bit lacking in quality from what we’ve shown in other games.

“We seem to have the knack of scoring late goals and I think it’s down to the fitness of the players. When we train they put in a shift and they are taking that into the games. The two goals in five minutes killed the game off really.

“We know we can play a lot better but to win when you’re not at your best is a great thing to have.

“We’re over the moon with eight straight wins, it’s a phenomenal achievement. It’s just brilliant the way they keep rolling in the results and we’re in a brilliant position, hopefully we can stay in there.”

Elsewhere in the division, Cirencester blew a lead against Paulton as they were defeated 3-1 at the Corinium.

Fielding Forest Green loanee George Washbourne on the wing, the Centurions went into the break 1-0 up.

They took the lead in the 36th minute when Ben Wells fed Aidan Bennett, and the full-back sent in a cross that Sam Collier laid off for Scott Griffin to volley home from the edge of the box.

However, after Collier had a headed effort ruled out for offside in the second period, Brian Hughes’ men crumbled.

Paulton levelled in the 56th minute when Ciren stopper Lee Clatworthy raced out of goal and the striker shot into the empty net from 25 yards.

Soon after the home side failed to clear and were punished as James Billing acrobatically steered a header past Clatworthy.

Brandon Barnes - on loan to Paulton from Chippenham - came on as a substitute late on and had a major impact in the final quarter of an hour.

He was twice denied by Clatworthy, but the Centurions stopper could do nothing about Barnes’ exquisite 25-yard lob with six minutes to go.
