CHRIS Pethick cut a frustrated figure after his Purton side were given a 7-1 hammering at Tytherington in Division One West.

The Red House boss could not help but feel irritated by the emphatic defeat, which he believes was down to missing a large number of his key players.

Purton have had to deal with significant injuries and absences throughout this season and that shows no sign of letting up.

And reigning champions Tytherington were in no mood to be charitable in South Gloucestershire as they put the Wiltshire outfit to the sword.

Pethick said afterwards: “We’re missing far too many players and it’s showing.

“We’re having so much bad luck, we just haven’t got a side and are struggling.

“Players are away, suspended, ill or not fit - that’s what it is.”

Wootton Bassett were in rampant mood as they dished out a 6-1 thumping to Carterton.

Striker Mark Barnes continued his incredible exploits in front of goal this campaign by bagging a hat-trick, while Shaun Terry collected a brace and Matty Bennett also chipped in.

Nevertheless, Bassett boss Dave Turner did not want to single out individuals, instead praising the team as a whole for their display.

“It was just a very good all-round performance,” he said.

“Everyone was a seven or eight out of 10 and we did play well, when I looked around there was no one who didn’t have a decent game.

“When we get everyone playing to that level we are a good team.

“Their manager said we were superb from start to finish and it was nice of him to recognise that.

“Their keeper had a good game and he saved four one-on-ones, so it could have been even more.

“The only downside is that we conceded a goal, but that’s being very picky. I couldn’t fault a single player.”

Fairford played out a 0-0 stalemate with Clanfield at Cinder Lane as a 20-minute cameo from new signing Bradley Gill failed to inspire them to victory.

Home manager Paul Braithwaite declared himself content with a draw but said his team must improve in front of goal.

“Our goalkeeper made one fantastic save in the first half but apart from that he’s done nothing but take goal kicks,” said Braithwaite.

“We didn’t concede which was good and we now need to focus on putting it in at the other end.

“We didn’t finish the opportunities we created for the amount of chances we had.

“Clanfield use the ball very well in the channels and we dealt with that very well, but unfortunately we were missing that cutting edge.

“We weren’t quite on it which was a shame, but I was happy with a draw.”

Elsewhere, Lambourn and Cricklade shared a 2-2 draw while Ryan Stanners scored for New College in their 3-1 defeat to Lydney.

New College boss Rob Hopkins said: “The lads were disappointed when they came off because we gifted them three goals.

“We created enough chances to win the game but we only took one.

“The players felt they were quite sloppy with their competitiveness defensively and that was the difference between the sides. They defended well and we didn’t.”
