SHRIVENHAM sorrows of conceding two late goals at Binfield to suffer a 2-1 defeat were quickly lifted as they discovered that they could no longer be relegated from Hellenic League Premier Division.

With Newbury suffering a 4-3 home loss to basement boys Abingdon Town and Holyport thrashed 6-0 by new leaders Wantage Town, Sam Collier’s side can no longer finish in the bottom four.

And while the Barrington Park player-boss was pleased that his team are now safe, he was disappointed to leave Berkshire emptied-handed.

“We were leading with 88 minutes on the clock,” he said. “Josh Fowler had given us the lead with his 30th goal of the season and then we lost our concentration late in the game.

“To come away having thought that we have got all three points with nothing is very disappointing.

“The positive is that we are officially safe so that made it a little bit easier as we were all very disappointed to have lost to two late goals.

“We just switched off and we let them take all three points.”

Fowler had volleyed Shrivenham into the lead midway through the first-half when he connected with Dan Drewett’s cross after a fine passing move.

But with the clock ticking away, Binfield hit back to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Brad Brown fired the Moles level in the 88th minute as he pounced to bury a deflected shot and then as Shrivenham tried to come to terms with conceding so late Jemel Johnson struck in the second minute of stoppage time to deny the visitors a share of the spoils.

“Maybe we were still a bit tired from Thursday (Town beat Abingdon Town 4-0),” Collier said. “But we just lacked that bit of belief.

“It was like the old days where the team would go into the lead and then go on and lose.

“We need to start believing that we can win these games, because we are competing with these top sides.

“But we can now relax a little and look to finish the season as well as we can now that we are safe.”
