SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb believes that the traditional 4-4-2 formation still has its place in the modern game.

With more and more sides looking to overload the midfield, Webb, who has varied his formation in the opening weeks of the Southern League Division One South and West season, feels that the formation he plays will be dictated by varying factors.

“A lot of teams look at the bigger clubs and try and copy that,” Webb said. “When they are away from home they’ll look at being 4-5-1 and overloading the midfield.

“When they are at home they try and be a 4-3-3. But 4-4-2 still has its place, it has worked for us in the past and when we feel it is right use it we will do so.

“When you are deciding what formation you are going to be playing you have to think about what suits you, what suits the players you have available and what the opposition are like.

“On Saturday, we were 4-4-2 because it suited the squad and we didn’t have Ross Adams or Dave Bampton available.”

Adams will return to the Marine squad tonight for the visit of Western League champions Larkhall Athletic.

Larkhall, like the South Marston men, have won their previous three matches and Webb is expecting a tough test at the Webb’s Wood Stadium.

“Larkhall have that winning mentality after winning a the title, in what is a tough league, last year,” Webb added.

“They have beaten Merthyr (Town) and North Leigh which is no mean and they will provide us with a tough game.”

Webb is hoping to have the paperwork through to allow striker Luke Abrahart to play this evening.

The hitman returned to the club last week from Didcot Town but the paperwork for his transfer had not been completed in time for him to feature in the 2-0 success at Fleet Town on Saturday.

And Marine boss Dave Webb is keen to have striker, who left South Marston for Thatcham last term, after seeing him in training last week.

“Luke came in to training at the end of last week and he looked extremely sharp,” Webb told the Advertiser.

“He gives us another option up top and that is something that we need.”

Meanwhile, Highworth Town will be looking to build on their 2-0 success over Bracknell Town from the weekend when they travel to struggling Abingdon United.

Kevin Moloney remains in charge this evening for the trip to Oxfordshire with boss John Fisher on holiday and a win tonight could move the Worthians in to second place.
