JOHN Fisher believes his Highworth side can win the league after watching a convincing win over Thatcham Town on Saturday.

Despite the 2-1 scoreline Fisher said that it was the best he had seen his team play in his three years at the club against a team who sat second in the league going into the game.

After dominating the first half Highworth found themselves a goal behind at the start of the second half but goals from Ryan King and Callum Parsons secured all three points for the visitors.

The season may only be seven games old for the Worthians but Fisher has already tipped them for the title if they can keep up the same level of performance.

“We battered them, we were the best team by far and we could have scored four or five more,” he said.

“That has to be the best performance I have seen since I have been back at the club.

“If they play like that every game then we have got to believe we can win the league, but the problem is they’re not going to play like that every game.

“When all 11 players are on their game, and yesterday they were, there was not one player who wasn’t playing well.

“I think the scoreline is good for them because we had at least four good chances, not half chances, to score more.

“It is always nice to have a day like that because you don’t get many.”

Thatcham grabbed the lead after the break, when a cross found Mark Hughes on the right and he was able to loop his header across the goal past Gary Stevens.

The visitors responded immediately when Matty Horsell chased down a Thatcham defender, robbed him of possession and drove determinedly into the box.

He was able to cross low into a crowded box where King was on hand to hit a half-volley home for the equaliser.

Fifteen minutes later, a free kick on the right was floated in to the back post by Ryan King.

Ash Taylor did well to head it back across the goal and Parsons was placed to head home from close range to give Highworth the lead.

The win lifted Highworth to second in the league, a point behind Highmoor Ibis with a game in hand.

“I think Thatacham’s position in second was a bit of a false one because the players said that Abingdon who are towards the bottom were a better team,” added Fisher.

“We have now got to be looking to pick up six points from our next two games otherwise yesterday’s performance would have been for nothing.

“I have a good side and I think the players are starting to believe now.

“They have the ability it is just their heads now and whether they have their heads on for the game.”
