FAIRFORD Town continued their shaky start to the season as they went down 3-0 to North Leigh on Saturday.

After a bright start from Fairford at Cinder Lane they fell behind after 15 minutes and never looked like getting back into the Hellenic League Division One West clash.

Fairford now sit 11th in the league just a point off bottom side New College after only one win in their opening four games.

Manager Gareth Davies was disappointed by his team’s display but insists that they must be patient as new players bed into the side.

“It was not good, we just weren’t at the races, I can’t put it any clearer than that,” he said.

“To be fair they (Leigh) are a decent side but we just didn’t compete.

“We’ve got a lot of new faces from last year so it is going to take time for everyone to get used to what we want from them.”

North Leigh are now in third place in the league and the visitors opened the scoring with 14 minutes on the clock through Andrew Caton.

Caton cut in off the right wing and beat a defender before firing into the corner from outside the box.

Fairford looked despondent after the first goal and North Leigh doubled their advantage before the break thanks to a strike from Jacob Hughes.

Michael Bird extended the lead in the second half to leave the Reds looking back on their third defeat of a tough week.

“I think we started off brightly in the first 20 minutes and looked in control but as soon as we conceded we just capitulated and our heads went down,” added Davies. “We have lost a few recently and you worry because losing becomes a habit.

“It is now down to us coaching staff to get the players’ heads up. The players are more than capable of turning it around.

“They are all good enough otherwise they wouldn’t be at the club we just have to get them believing in themselves more.

“At the moment it is only early so it is not a crisis but if we get to after Christmas and the results are not going well then something is seriously wrong.”

Meanwhile, Purton’s impressive start to the campaign came to a shuddering halt as they lost 5-2 at Lydney Town
