SOUTHBROOK secured their fourth win on the bounce as they beat Corsham Town reserves on their travels 5-4 in the Wiltshire Football League Premier Division.

Reece Gilliver opened the scoring for the visiting side and that was doubled before 30 minutes by Devan Bryan.

Corsham halved the deficit but Gilliver restored Southbrook’s advantage just before half time with his second.

In the second half Devon Brown saved a penalty for Southbrook before Corsham made it 3-2. Before a second from Bryan and a goal from Billy Sly restored the lead.

However it was a nervy ending as the hosts scored two quick-fire goals but they ran out of time to complete the comeback.

The result lifts Soutbrook to fifth position in the league and manager Albert Dearing suggested that the scoreline flattered the hosts.

“Two goals right towards the end of the game probably made the scoreline look better for them than it was,” he said.

“We were always in control but in the last five minutes I think we just switched off.

“We dropped five points in the first two games but have now gone on a run of four wins.

“So after a shaky first two games we are finding our feet and playing well.”

With a turnover of players and some strong sides in division, Dearing does not foresee a defence of Southbrook’s crown being easy.

“The league is smashing this season with some really strong teams in it,” added Dearing.

“I think it is going to be very hard to win the league what with the number of games we have to play.

“It is going to be a very long challenging season but we’ll enjoy it.”

Early league leaders Ludgershall Sports slipped up at the weekend as they were held to a goalless draw away to Melksham Town reserves.

Trowbridge Wanderers played out an exciting draw at home to Wroughton which finished 2-2, while Wootton Bassett Town development lost away to Shrewton United 4-1.

Malmesbury Victoria beat Trowbridge Town 4-2.
