THE North Wiltshire Youth League is hoping that silence will be golden tomorrow.

Following the minute’s silence in honour of Remembrance Sunday, the league will be holding a ‘Silent Sunday’.

The initiative is aimed at allowing the children participating in the games without any shouting or screaming from the sidelines.

The North Wilts League, who are hoping that the vast majority of their clubs will sign up to take part before tomorrow’s games, have the motto this year of ‘Let Them Play’.

The league’s chairman Andy Ratcliffe said: “With it being Remembrance Sunday we thought we would try to extend the silence.

“All the clubs will honour those who have lost their lives fighting for our country.

“But we will also have the vast majority taking part in ‘Silent Sunday’.

“What we are looking for is for the spectators on the sidelines to watch the game in silence with a bit of polite applause when something in the match is going well.

“Our motto this year is Let Them Play and this is an extension of that.”

A silent day scheme has been used by Lancashire FA rolled with this in March of this year. extensive research was carried out prior to and after the event which proved to be a vast success.

And the North Wilts League is hoping that this will help continue their efforts to positively change attitudes and behaviour in grass roots youth football.

The league have said that young players told them that they can get scared, intimidated and frightened by excessive levels of noise, while the older one said that they get annoyed, irritated and angry and the above can often culminate in cross words with parents and coaches.

Clubs taking part are expected to manage the initiative internally for total adherence, while parents and spectators must refrain from any direct communication to players, the referee and the coaches.
