NEW College Swindon coach Matt Cosnett was delighted with the character that young side showed when they came from behind to defeat Carterton.

Trailing 2-1 to the Oxfordshire visitors, the students hit back to win 3-2 and record only their third win in Hellenic League Division One West this term.

And while the youngsters have been on the wrong end of some heavy defeats in recent weeks, the majority have come in cup matches from teams in the Premier Division, Cosnett was pleased with the performance.

“It was a very good win,” Cosnett said. “We have set the boys a points target for November and this is the first win of that target.”

New College went 1-0 down early on, however, a sublime 35-yeard free-kick from 16-year-old Antonio Gerrish drew the two sides level.

Carterton then made the most of some sloppy defending to restore their lead, before a fine team move played in Harvey Scholes to bend the ball into the bottom corner.

And with only four minutes left on the clock, Harry Myles capped his return from injury with the winner.

As well as Gerrish, New College had three more 16-year-olds in the squad.

“The atmosphere we have in the squad this year has been fantastic,” Cosnett said. “We have got a number of first years who have really fitted in well with the Hellenic squad.

“On the whole they are dealing well with the physicality of the game, but they do at times need to stamp their authority on matches, move the ball a little quicker.

“But overall we pleased with the players that we have.”
