FEW would have bet on Shrivenham travelling to high flying Ascot and winning but that is what Sam Collier’s men did to end a run of 14 league games without a win.

Goals from Steve Olphert and John Rees were enough to secure the mammoth win which felt like winning the FA Cup to Collier and his men at the final whistle.

Shrivvy would have been long odds as they headed away to top of the league Ascot with a make-shift squad, with Collier having to turn to his brother-in-law to step in.

After riding their luck in the first half they put on a fine performance in the second to snatch all three points.

The visitors took the lead in the 57th minute when Olphert latched onto a loose ball outside the area and unleashed a shot that sailed into the bottom left hand corner to the delight of the handful of travelling fans.

After a near scare when the frame of Wes Clarke’s goal was shaken, Shrivvy were able to break and added a second goal courtesy of Rees, who capitalised on goalkeeper Chris Grace's hesitancy from Sam Packer's low cross to convert from close range.

“I’d forgotten what it feels like to win,” said Collier after the game.

“We’d gone there with 13 players, two reserve lads who had never been involved with us, Matt Bown struggling massively, we got there with very bare bones.

“We turned up relatively late, the warm up looked tired and everybody almost looked like it was a done deal.

“In the second half we had fantastic performances from six or seven key players we scored our goal and that gave us a bit of belief.

“For the first time since we have been on this run we have gone 1-0 up and that gave us something to hold on to other than the point and there was only one team that looked like scoring again and that was us.

“John Rees scored another goal with five minutes to go and that was obviously a fantastic feeling and at the final whistle it was a big relief really.

“Because we have obviously been on a horrendous run the one thing that I have questioned of the lads is their desire.

“Today will count for nothing if we gone on another run of four or five defeats, but we'll enjoy it.

“One of their players said that we haven’t won the FA Cup, but it felt like that because of the run we have been on and we had forgotten that feeling.”
