THE Clifton had a lucky escape when they were held by Ramsbury in the Adver Cup after 120 minutes of football could not split the two sides.

The teams played out a 1-1 draw and will now have to face each other again in a replay after they could not find a winner in extra-time.

Dan Longley opened the scoring for the hosts, who sit top of the Swindon & District League’s Division One, as he was able to chip the ball over the onrushing keeper with the ball ending up in the bottom corner.

However Ramsbury were able to pull the tie back level before the break and took that momentum into the second half. The home side were left clinging on to the draw by the end with the Clifton keeper pulling off a number of fine saves.

The game was still level after 30 minutes of extra time but, rather than going to penalties, the game will be replayed next week, much to the bemusement of Clifton manager Carl Read.

“It doesn’t make sense to me why you would put the players though 120 minutes of a match and not have a result at the end of it,” he said.

“It was a physically tiring game for the players and now they have to go back to Ramsbury which could be a completely different game.

“It was a closely contested match and Ramsbury did have the better of things overall.

“We are going to go all out when we play them again, and not sit back and defend like we did when we scored on Saturday.

“I think we can beat them next time, we were quite poor on Saturday and we got away with it.”

In the only game in the Premier Division, DJC Marlborough beat Swiss Chalet Rangers 3-2 to lift themselves off the foot of the table.

Swiss Chalet took the lead through Gareth Walton but let that lead slip and a second goal from Walton was not enough to get the visitors back into the tie.

There was also only one game in Division One and it was a comfortable day for Swindon Centurians as they also lifted themselves off the bottom of the league with an 8-1 victory over, now bottom, Core Construction.

Four goals from Danny Comer added to braces from Ian Drew and Alex Woolhouse to secure the win for the visitors, with Anthony Jones netting a consolation goal for the home side.

Chiseldon made it through to the next round of the George Thomas Cup with a 5-3 win over Swindon Spifires.

Ibra Jagure, Nick Salter, Daniel Vaughan and Jacob Squire all got on the score-sheet for the away side to add to an own goal.
