WESTBURY United Reserves may still be bottom of the table but the Wiltshire League basement boys handed themselves a lifeline with victory over Vale of Pewsey last weekend.

Westbury have played the most games in the division so far but are now just three points behind 18th-placed Marlborough Town after notching up their third victory of the season with a 3-2 triumph at Meadow Lane.

After Jack Hayward’s first-half opener was cancelled out, Marc Lanfear and Matt Friendship scored to put the hosts in control before Pewsey netted a last-gasp consolation goal.

“It’s been a difficult season - we’ve got a changeable side because we’re a reserve team and it’s hard for us to get any consistency,” said Westbury manager Jason Edwards.

“The first team call up players all the time and we’re lucky that we have some good youth products to bring in.

“We had eight changes from the game against Wroughton but we had a lot more of a senior side out and I think that made the difference.

“It was a lot more comfortable than 3-2 makes it look. We dominated the game and deserved to win.

“(Getting off the bottom of the table) is all we’re thinking about really. We just want to accumulate as many points as possible because we’re not a bottom-of-the-table side.”

Elsewhere, Southbrook showed no signs of rustiness as they tasted victory in their first outing in seven weeks.

They won 3-1 at fellow Swindon outfit Supermarine Sports thanks to goals from Jamie Sheppard, Tom McCulloch and substitute Craig Kent.

Trowbridge Wanderers got back to winning ways as they thrashed Wootton Bassett Town Development 4-1 whilst table-topping Ludgershall Sports played out a thrilling 4-4 draw with Sarum Youth.
