SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb says that the onus is on his players to drag themselves back to winning ways after they suffered another gut-wrenching last-gasp defeat at the Webb’s Wood Stadium on Saturday.

Marine went looking to get over their heart-breaking 4-3 loss to Evesham United seven days previous as they hosted basement boys Bishops Cleeve but in a dramatic clash that saw both teams finish the afternoon with ten men, Webb’s men once again slipped to defeat with a goal at the death.

Chris Taylor’s penalty and Bradley Gray’s goal saw the home side twice come from behind but the Marine chief conceded that his team are making too many errors at the back.

“We lost to a team that have brought in some new players and are fighting to stay in the league, and my players were certainly fully aware that it wasn’t going to be one of those games where you turn up and roll four or five in,” said Webb.

“We keep gifting goals to the opposition. They’re capitalising on our errors and we need to cut that out. And we also need to start taking our chances and working harder from the front.

“I’m really, really disappointed and we have to regroup and regroup quickly.

“Ross Adams is the captain of the club and he’s been magnificent but he’s made one mistake and the lad scores a deflected goal in the last two minutes of the game.

“It’s unlike Sam Morris to do something where he’s raised his hands and levelled the game up – it’s completely out of character.

“As players and me as the manager; we have to take responsibility for the way that we’re not winning games and that needs to change.

“If we’ve got the right players at this club, they’ll step up to the mark and show that they want to be here. If they don’t, then we’ll make changes.

“We’re in a bit of form at the minute where we’re not winning games. It’s a test for us all.”

Marine were a goal down just two minutes in as Joe Shepherd and Ryan Stanners got themselves in a muddle and gifted possession to Cleeve full-back Matt McGee, who raced clear before slotting into the bottom corner.

Only a last-ditch save from Sam Warrell to deny Jack Watts prevented a shell-shocked Marine from going two goals down but after Gray saw his superb volley crack against the crossbar, the visitors were down to ten men just after the half-hour mark as defender Alton Axton was shown a second yellow card by referee Aaron Moody for a high foot on Connor Waldon.

Despite their man advantage, Marine struggled to break down their opponents, with Matt Gould clawing Adams’ header away from the top corner as Cleeve’s lead maintained intact at the break.

In the second period, Josh Morse and Stanners linked up, with the former firing just wide of the far post, before winger Morse went down in the box under the attentions of Danny Sherry, earning the hosts a spot-kick that Taylor dispatched to level things up.

Gould saved well from Morse minutes later but Marine’s man advantage soon dissipated as half-time substitute Sam Morris picked up two yellow cards in quick succession, his second for reacting angrily to a challenge from Watts and shoving over the Cleeve striker.

Things then turned from bad to worse for Webb’s men as Sol Wheatley burst down the left flank before teeing up Watts, who left Warrell a standing spectator as he scooped the ball into the net to restore his side’s lead.

But Marine hit back midway through the half, with Morse striking the inside of the left-hand post and the arriving Gray firing in the rebound from point-blank range.

Cleeve broke on the counter but Ryan Shaw failed to hit the target whilst Wheatley fired narrowly over after a mazy run into the home penalty box and then, with three minutes of normal time remaining, Watt seized on a loose ball and tried his luck from outside the area.

And despite Warrell getting a hand on his lofted effort, the ball still arced into the net as the visitors stole all three points.
