BRYAN Watson was pleased that his Spectrum side avoided a potential banana skin in their Adver Cup quarter-final tie as they completed a comfortable 5-1 win over KS Miltax.

The Premier Division side were drawn against high-flying Miltax, who currently sit joint-top of Division One, but Spectrum were able to come through unscathed to progress into the semi-finals of the competition.

Watson’s side went two goals up in the first half courtesy of a penalty from Eddie Allsopp before Jamie Clements doubled the hosts lead.

Miltax pulled a goal back after the break when Vladmir Bedrich gave the lower league side hope, but Spectrum played on the counter-attack and Allsopp went on to complete his hat-trick to add to a strike from Carl O’Reagan.

Now Watson has his sights set on a place in the final to prolong their season and make history at the club.

“We weren’t too sure what the other team would be like because they are riding high in the league below and they weren’t a bad team,” he said.

“They were a decent footballing team but we just played to our strengths and targeted their weaknesses and it was quite comfortable in the end.

“The club has never been to the final of the Adver Cup or never won it anyway, and it would be great for us to get there.

“The opportunity is there and I would like to think on our day we can give anyone a game and the incentive is there to get to the final and maybe win it for the first time in the club history, what more could you need.”

In the other quarter-final played on Saturday a hat-trick from Roger Mundy helped Avtar Construction to a 5-0 win over Bassett Bulldogs.

The quarter-finals of the George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup were also played over the weekend and Swiss Chalet progressed with a 5-1 win over Redhouse with goals coming from Jason Castle, Daryl Herring, Neil Herring and a brace from Scott Bailey.

Chris Wood scored the only goal as Old Town united beat Core Construction and an Aaron Smith double helped Chiseldon into the semi-finals with a 4-0 win over North Swindon WMC.

It was a seven goal thriller in the other quarter-final as Village Inn scored in the last ten minutes to beat DJC Marlborough 4-3.

In the only game in the Premier Division Lower Stratton came from two goals down to beat Shield & Dagger 3-2, while Swindon Centurians completed a comfortable 3-0 home win over Ramsbury.
