THE CLIFTON will go looking to pull off a monumental upset when they lock horns with unbeaten Avtar Construction in the semi-finals of the Adver Cup.

Division One Clifton are in with a shout of making a cup final after dispatching Shield & Dagger 5-3 in the quarter-finals last weekend, but the semi-final draw has thrown up a showdown with fearsome Premier Division leaders Avtar, who have won every game they’ve played so far this term.

Despite admitting that his team will be massive underdogs in the next round, Clifton manager Alastair Drew thinks that his side, who find themselves amongst three other Premier Division outfits in the semis, will be looking forward to attempting to upset the script.

“They’re probably the team we would have liked in the final but at least if we can get past them, we’ll have an easier game after that,” said Drew.

“They’re unbeaten and it’s going to be a difficult game but I think all the lads have got an eye on that game.

“It’s our first season in the league and we’re doing well in the cup. We’re looking forward to it.”

Brendan Shaw netted a first-half brace to put the Clifton two goals to the good but Shield & Dagger hit back either side of half-time to level up the tie.

However, the Division One side hit back through Jake Kitchin and a Shaw penalty that completed his hat-trick.

The visitors did find the net again to make it 4-3 but Dan Longney rounded off Clifton’s progress.

Elsewhere, Damian Smolinski’s goal ensured that KS Miltax went three points clear at the top of Division One with a 1-0 victory over Ramsbury whilst Swindon Centurians beat Swindon Spitfires 2-0 and Core Construction thrashed Redhouse 4-1.

Avtar made it eight wins from eight in the Premier Division with eight goals against DJC Marlborough, Shane Hibbert scoring four whilst Roger Mundy, Daniel Hiscocks, Jason McGovern and Chris Price were all also on target in their 8-1 triumph.

Second-placed Spectrum beat Village Inn 2-1 whilst Lower Stratton and Old Town United played out a 2-2 draw.
